FellowSHIPS

2010 will mark the first year for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's Sports Medicine and Spine Fellowships.

Spine Fellowship

The Spine Fellowship provides a comprehensive experience in adult and pediatric spine disorders at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital, the primary academic affiliates of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The fellow will receive exposure to all aspects of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine pathology, encompassing trauma, tumor, deformity and degenerative conditions.  A broad experience in primary and revision cases can be expected, including minimally invasive, motion sparing and complex reconstructive techniques.

Didactic conferences will augment a clinical and surgical educational environment and provide an opportunity for developing one’s teaching and leadership skills with residents and medical students. Protected time is provided for clinical and basic science research with biomechanical, cadaver and gait study laboratories available.  An opportunity exists for participation in ongoing clinical trials involving regenerative techniques for spine fusion. The completion of a research paper publishable in a peer-reviewed journal will be required for successful completion of the program.

Applicants from the United States must have completed an orthopaedic residency and be Board-eligible or –certified.  Applicants from outside the United States must have a current ECFMG certificate.

The fellowship has ACGME accreditation pending at this time.

Our program participates in the SF Match program with an application deadline of January 31.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR PROGRAM IS LISTED AS "McGAW MEDICAL CENTER of NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY" in the SF Match progam.

Sport Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine Fellowship is an integrated multidisciplinary program that provides a comprehensive experience in the operative and non-operative treatment of sports injuries of the knee, shoulder, elbow, and hip. Experience with arthroscopic and open techniques for meniscal repair, cartilage replacement, biological resurfacing, and ligament repairs and complex reconstructions is offered. In conjunction with experts in primary care sports medicine, physiatry and physical/occupational therapy, the fellow will gain experience with the management of athletes at Northwestern University and professional athletes with on-site participation as part of the team caring for the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, and Bears.

Participation in a sports-focused curriculum, resident teaching, conferences, journal club and relevant clinical and/or basic research is expected. There will be exposure in cadaver, biomechanics, and psychomotor skills labs that will complement the clinical experience.

Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited orthopaedic surgical residency program.  ACGME accreditation is pending for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Our program participates in the SF Match program with an application deadline of December 1.
